Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Accordion Pill Zaleplon (AP-ZP) is a gastroretentive, controlled-release formulation of the non-benzodiazepine hypnotic zaleplon, developed by Intec Pharma for the treatment of insomnia. The formulation utilizes Intec's proprietary Accordion Pill technology, which consists of a multi-layer, biodegradable film folded into a standard-size capsule. Upon reaching the stomach, the capsule dissolves, and the film unfolds, allowing it to be retained in the stomach for several hours. This gastroretention enables the controlled release of zaleplon into the upper gastrointestinal tract, extending its absorption window. The goal of this delivery system is to leverage zaleplon's short half-life to provide effective sleep maintenance throughout the night while ensuring that drug levels drop sufficiently by morning to avoid next-day residual effects or sedation.
