Overview
Acebrophylline is a therapeutic agent that combines the properties of a bronchodilator and a mucolytic. It is a salt of ambroxol and acefylline (a derivative of theophylline). The acefylline component acts as a bronchodilator by inhibiting phosphodiesterase enzymes, which increases intracellular cyclic AMP levels and leads to smooth muscle relaxation in the airways. The ambroxol component acts as a mucolytic by decreasing the viscosity of bronchial secretions and stimulating the production of surfactant, thereby facilitating mucus clearance. It is primarily used in the management of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) and bronchial asthma to improve airflow and reduce airway obstruction.
