Overview

Aceclidine + tropicamide is a topical ophthalmic combination drug developed primarily for the treatment of presbyopia. Aceclidine is a miotic agent that induces pupil constriction (miosis) with minimal accommodation effect, historically used in glaucoma treatment. Tropicamide is an antimuscarinic agent that causes short-acting mydriasis (pupil dilation) and cycloplegia by blocking muscarinic receptors in the eye. The combination aims to produce strong miosis via aceclidine while using tropicamide to regulate accommodation and prevent ciliary muscle spasm and myopic shift. This balance creates a pinhole effect improving near vision without compromising distance vision or causing significant brow ache or myopic blur. The onset of action occurs approximately within 20–30 minutes after instillation, with effects lasting around four to six hours. This drug has been studied in Phase II clinical trials for presbyopia treatment under names such as PRX-100 and Liquid Vision. It uses proprietary formulations to optimize bioavailability and efficacy.
