Overview

Acellular dermal matrix (ADM), often referred to as regenerative tissue matrix (RTM) in the context of products like AlloDerm, is a biologic tissue allograft derived from human donor dermis. It is processed through a proprietary method to remove cellular components, including epidermis and dermal cells, to eliminate immunogenicity and the risk of disease transmission while preserving the structural and biochemical integrity of the extracellular matrix (ECM). The resulting scaffold, composed primarily of Type I collagen and intact vascular architecture, serves as a biological framework that promotes host cell repopulation, revascularization, and tissue regeneration rather than scar formation. Developed by LifeCell Corporation (now part of AbbVie), it is widely used in reconstructive surgery, including breast reconstruction, abdominal wall repair, and periodontal procedures such as root coverage for gingival recession.
