Acellular pertussis vaccine + whole-cell pertussis vaccine refers to the use or co-administration of both acellular (aP) and whole-cell (wP) formulations of the pertussis (whooping cough) vaccine. Both vaccines are designed to protect against infection by Bordetella pertussis, but differ in composition and safety profile. The whole-cell vaccine contains inactivated entire B. pertussis organisms, while the acellular version contains purified components such as inactivated pertussis toxin, filamentous hemagglutinin, fimbrial antigens, and/or pertactin[3][4]. Whole-cell vaccines are effective but associated with more frequent adverse reactions; acellular vaccines were developed to reduce these side effects while maintaining efficacy[1][3][4]. Both types induce immunity by stimulating an immune response against B. pertussis antigens.
