Overview

A combination of acetate, butyrate, and propionate refers to a mixture of the three primary short-chain fatty acids (SCFAs) produced by gut microbiota during the fermentation of dietary fibers. These SCFAs act as signaling molecules with multiple physiological effects. They are involved in energy metabolism (acetate is an energy source for host cells; propionate is used for gluconeogenesis), regulation of glucose uptake in muscle cells, modulation of inflammation via G-protein coupled receptors (GPR41/FFAR3 and GPR43/FFAR2), and inhibition of histone deacetylases (HDACs). The combination has been shown experimentally to increase glucose uptake in skeletal muscle cell models at certain concentrations and may contribute to improved metabolic health and anti-inflammatory effects. This combination is not a pharmaceutical drug per se but may be used as a dietary supplement or research tool[1][2][5][6][8].
