Overview

This combination of five pharmacological agents—acetylcholine, sodium nitroprusside, angiotensin II, norepinephrine, and phentolamine—is used as a set of investigational probes in mechanistic clinical research to evaluate distinct vascular function pathways. Acetylcholine is administered to assess endothelial-dependent vasodilation via nitric oxide signaling, while sodium nitroprusside evaluates endothelial-independent vasodilation. Angiotensin II and norepinephrine are used to probe vasoconstrictive pathways (the renin-angiotensin and adrenergic systems, respectively), and phentolamine acts as an alpha-adrenergic blocker to isolate specific vascular responses. This combination is primarily utilized in studies led by Russell Richardson to characterize vascular adaptations in aging and cardiovascular conditions such as hypertension and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). These agents are well-known generic small molecules and peptides used purely as research tools rather than as a single therapeutic drug product.
