Overview

A combination of two repurposed small-molecule drugs, acetylcysteine and bromhexine, being investigated for the treatment of mild to moderate COVID-19. Acetylcysteine (NAC) acts as an antioxidant and reducing agent with potential viral intercepting properties. Bromhexine (BMX) is a host-directed therapy that inhibits the transmembrane protease serine 2 (TMPRSS2), a host cell surface protease required by SARS-CoV-2 for spike protein priming and cell entry. This combination was evaluated in a Phase 3 clinical trial (NCT04928495) in Brazil to assess its impact on clinical duration and viral load in outpatients.
