Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Acetylsalicylic acid + esomeprazole is an oral fixed-dose combination of low-dose **acetylsalicylic acid** and the proton-pump inhibitor **esomeprazole**. Acetylsalicylic acid irreversibly inhibits platelet cyclooxygenase-1, reducing thromboxane A2 production and platelet aggregation for cardiovascular and cerebrovascular event prevention. Esomeprazole covalently inhibits the gastric hydrogen-potassium ATPase, suppressing gastric acid secretion and reducing the risk of acetylsalicylic acid-associated gastric and duodenal ulcers. The AstraZeneca-developed product was marketed as Axanum and other regional brands, generally as an 81 mg or 100 mg acetylsalicylic acid plus 20 mg esomeprazole hard capsule.
