Overview

This is a combination regimen consisting of four drugs: acitretin, emtricitabine, tenofovir, and raltegravir. Emtricitabine and tenofovir are nucleoside/nucleotide reverse transcriptase inhibitors (NRTIs) that inhibit HIV-1 reverse transcriptase, thereby blocking viral replication. Raltegravir is an integrase strand transfer inhibitor (INSTI) that prevents the integration of HIV DNA into the host genome. Acitretin is a retinoid primarily used for psoriasis and other skin disorders; it acts by modulating gene expression through retinoic acid receptors but has no established role in antiretroviral therapy or HIV treatment. The combination of emtricitabine, tenofovir, and raltegravir is well-studied as an effective antiretroviral regimen for HIV-1 infection in both treatment-naive patients and as post-exposure prophylaxis[1][2][3][4][5]. There are no known clinical uses or studies supporting the addition of acitretin to this antiretroviral combination.
