Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Act-HIB + ViscoGel is an investigational vaccine formulation that combines the commercially available Haemophilus influenzae type b (Hib) conjugate vaccine, Act-HIB, with the ViscoGel adjuvant system. ViscoGel is a proprietary chitosan-based hydrogel adjuvant developed by Viscogel AB, composed of the chitosan derivative Viscosan (50% degree of deacetylation) processed into gel particles. Act-HIB consists of Hib capsular polysaccharide (polyribosylribitol phosphate) conjugated to a tetanus toxoid carrier protein. The ViscoGel adjuvant functions as an immunostimulatory delivery vehicle designed to enhance both humoral and cellular immune responses, specifically increasing interferon-gamma production compared to non-adjuvanted vaccines. This combination is intended for the prevention of Hib infections, which are significant causes of bacterial meningitis and pneumonia in children. It has been evaluated in a Phase I/IIa clinical trial (NCT01578070) where it demonstrated safety and enhanced immunogenicity.
