Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Activated charcoal + silicon dioxide is a combination gastrointestinal adsorbent used for the detoxification of the digestive tract and the relief of symptoms associated with functional dyspepsia and flatulence. **Activated charcoal** is a highly porous carbonaceous material that non-specifically adsorbs a wide variety of organic and inorganic toxins, drugs, and gases by trapping them within its internal pore structure, thereby preventing their systemic absorption. **Silicon dioxide** (often in a highly dispersed or colloidal form, such as Aerosil) acts as a complementary adsorbent with a high affinity for protein-based toxins, bacterial metabolites, and water. Additionally, silicon dioxide can assist in the reduction of intestinal gas through its physical properties. This combination is primarily marketed in Eastern European regions for indications including food poisoning, acute diarrhea, and bloating.
