Overview

Acupuncture + Mesalazine is an integrated therapeutic regimen being investigated for the treatment of mild-to-moderate active ulcerative colitis. The regimen combines the standard-of-care aminosalicylate mesalazine (5-aminosalicylic acid) with adjunctive acupuncture, specifically intradermal thumbtack needle embedding. Mesalazine exerts local anti-inflammatory effects in the colonic mucosa by activating peroxisome proliferator-activated receptor gamma (PPAR-gamma) and inhibiting the production of pro-inflammatory mediators such as prostaglandins and leukotrienes via the cyclooxygenase and lipoxygenase pathways. The addition of acupuncture is intended to enhance clinical remission rates and maintain remission through potential neuromodulatory and systemic anti-inflammatory mechanisms. This specific combination is the subject of clinical research led by Qin Yu.
