Acyclovir + candida antigen refers to the two therapeutic interventions evaluated in a Phase 4 randomized controlled trial (NCT05429151) conducted by Sohag University for the treatment of plantar warts. Acyclovir is a small molecule antiviral drug, traditionally used for herpes viruses, that is repurposed for intralesional injection to inhibit viral replication in HPV-induced warts. Candida antigen is a biological immunotherapy agent used to stimulate a localized cell-mediated immune response against the human papillomavirus (HPV). In the Sohag University study, these agents were compared as separate intralesional treatments, with acyclovir achieving a 65% complete clearance rate and Candida antigen achieving a 70% complete clearance rate after up to five sessions. The treatments are administered every two weeks directly into the wart base.
