Drug intelligence / Profile preview
**Acyclovir + hydrocortisone** is a fixed-dose topical cream containing 5% acyclovir, an anti-herpesvirus nucleoside analogue, and 1% hydrocortisone, a low-potency corticosteroid. Developed by Medivir as ME-609 and marketed as Xerese, Xerclear, Zoviduo, Zovirax Duo, and Activir Duo, it is used for early treatment of recurrent herpes labialis. Acyclovir is activated preferentially in herpes simplex virus-infected cells and inhibits viral DNA polymerase, while hydrocortisone activates glucocorticoid receptors to suppress local inflammatory responses. The combination reduces the likelihood of progression to ulcerative cold sores and shortens lesion-healing time.
