Adenosine 5'-triphosphate (ATP) is a purine nucleotide found in every cell of the human body and serves as the primary energy carrier in cellular metabolism. It consists of an adenine base, ribose sugar, and three phosphate groups. Intracellularly, ATP provides energy for numerous biochemical processes by releasing a phosphate group through hydrolysis. Extracellularly, ATP acts as a signaling molecule via purinergic receptors (P1 and P2), influencing neurotransmission, muscle contraction, cardiac function (notably negative chronotropic and dromotropic effects), platelet aggregation, vasodilation, and other physiological processes[1][4][5]. Clinically, intravenous or sublingual ATP has been used for acute therapy of paroxysmal supraventricular tachycardia (PSVT), pulmonary hypertension, pain management during anesthesia or surgery, improving mucociliary clearance in cystic fibrosis patients when combined with sodium channel blockers[4][8], and as supportive care in advanced cancer to prevent weight loss[8]. The injectable formulation "ATPace" was developed for rapid conversion of PSVT to normal sinus rhythm[5].
