Adenovirus-transfected dendritic cells + cytokine-induced killer cells is an autologous cellular immunotherapy combination developed by the Affiliated Hospital to Academy of Military Medical Sciences for the treatment of acute myeloid leukemia (AML). The therapy involves dendritic cells (DCs) that are genetically modified via a recombinant adenoviral vector to express two specific tumor-associated antigens: Mucin 1 (MUC1) and Survivin (BIRC5). These engineered DCs act as a vaccine to prime and activate the patient's T-cells against leukemia cells expressing these antigens. This vaccine is administered in conjunction with cytokine-induced killer (CIK) cells, which are a heterogeneous population of effector lymphocytes (primarily CD3+CD56+ T cells) expanded ex vivo with cytokines like IL-2 and IFN-gamma. CIK cells possess potent, non-MHC-restricted anti-tumor activity, providing a dual-action approach that combines antigen-specific immune activation with broad effector cell-mediated cytotoxicity to eliminate residual leukemic cells.
