Overview
The Teva Ad4/Ad7 Vaccine (now owned by Emergent BioSolutions) is an FDA-approved live, oral vaccine containing attenuated adenovirus type 4 and adenovirus type 7. It is specifically indicated for the active immunization of military recruits (ages 17 through 50) to prevent acute respiratory disease (ARD) caused by these adenovirus serotypes. The vaccine consists of two separate tablets, one for each serotype, which are enteric-coated to bypass the stomach and release the live virus in the intestine. This localized replication induces a protective systemic immune response (both humoral and cellular) without causing the respiratory illness typically associated with these viruses. The vaccine was developed to address the historically high rates of febrile ARD in military training environments and is used exclusively by the U.S. Department of Defense.
