Adipose-derived stem cells (ASCs) are a population of multipotent mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) harvested from adipose tissue, typically via liposuction. These cells are characterized by their ability to differentiate into multiple cell lineages and their potent paracrine activity, secreting a variety of growth factors and cytokines that promote angiogenesis, reduce inflammation, and stimulate tissue repair. In the context of chronic wounds, such as diabetic foot ulcers, venous ulcers, and pressure ulcers, ASCs are being investigated for their ability to restart the healing process in stagnant wound environments. The therapy involves the local injection of these cells into the wound bed to enhance vascularization and promote the formation of granulation tissue. Tower Outpatient Surgery Center has conducted Phase 2 clinical trials evaluating the safety and efficacy of ASCs for these indications.
