Overview

ASCs + fibrin glue is a combination cell-based therapy consisting of adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) and a fibrin-based delivery vehicle. Developed primarily by Tigenix (now part of Takeda), this therapy was investigated for the treatment of complex perianal fistulas, particularly in patients with Crohn's disease. The ASCs provide immunomodulatory and pro-regenerative effects by inhibiting T-cell proliferation and secreting anti-inflammatory cytokines, while the fibrin glue acts as a biocompatible scaffold to retain the cells at the site of the fistula and promote tissue healing. The therapy was evaluated in Phase 3 clinical trials, such as the FATT-1 study, where it was administered intralesionally to promote fistula closure.
