Adipose tissue-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ATMSCs) are multipotent stromal cells harvested from adipose tissue, currently being investigated by investigator Hanan Jafar at the University of Jordan for the treatment of advanced knee osteoarthritis (Stage III and IV). These cells are administered via intra-articular injection. The therapeutic mechanism is primarily attributed to the paracrine activity of the MSCs, which involves the secretion of a variety of anti-inflammatory cytokines, chemokines, and growth factors (collectively known as the secretome). These factors work to suppress local joint inflammation, inhibit the apoptosis of chondrocytes, and potentially stimulate extracellular matrix production, thereby aiming to alleviate pain and improve joint function in patients with degenerative joint disease.
