Overview

The adjuvanted influenza A (H7N9) monovalent vaccine is an inactivated split-virion vaccine developed to protect against the avian-origin H7N9 subtype of the Influenza A virus. It is formulated with an immunologic adjuvant—commonly AS03 or MF59—to enhance immune response due to the poor immunogenicity of unadjuvanted H7 hemagglutinin antigens. The primary indication is for pandemic preparedness and protection against potential outbreaks of avian H7N9 influenza in humans. The mechanism of action involves stimulating an immune response by presenting inactivated viral antigens along with an oil-in-water emulsion-based adjuvant that boosts antibody production and cross-reactivity. Developers include Sanofi Pasteur and GlaxoSmithKline Biologicals for AS03-adjuvanted formulations, as well as Novartis Vaccines and Diagnostics for MF59-adjuvanted versions[5][4][8]. Clinical studies have shown that two doses are required to achieve modest immunogenicity; single-dose responses are generally poor[2][1].
