This is a combination chemotherapy regimen consisting of adriamycin (doxorubicin), cyclophosphamide, and vincristine. Each drug has a distinct mechanism of action targeting cancer cells: - Adriamycin (doxorubicin) is an anthracycline antibiotic that intercalates DNA and inhibits topoisomerase II, leading to DNA damage and apoptosis. - Cyclophosphamide is an alkylating agent that crosslinks DNA strands, preventing cell division and causing cell death. - Vincristine is a vinca alkaloid that binds to tubulin, inhibiting microtubule formation required for mitosis. The combination exploits these complementary mechanisms to maximize antitumor activity. The VAC regimen has been used in the treatment of various cancers including metastatic carcinoma from unknown primary sites and advanced breast cancer[2][3][8]. It may also be used in other malignancies as part of multi-agent protocols.
