aH5N8c and aH5N6c are MF59-adjuvanted, cell culture-derived, subunit inactivated monovalent influenza A vaccines developed by Seqirus. These vaccines are designed to provide protection against avian influenza A virus subtypes H5N8 and H5N6, both of which are identified as having pandemic potential. The vaccines utilize the MF59 adjuvant, a squalene-based oil-in-water emulsion, to enhance the magnitude, breadth, and persistence of the immune response. Unlike traditional egg-based manufacturing, these vaccines are produced using mammalian cell-culture technology, which avoids egg-adaptive mutations in the hemagglutinin protein and allows for a more scalable and rapid production process during a pandemic threat.
