Drug intelligence / Profile preview
AIM-102 is an oral formulation of **interferon alfa-n3**, a multisubtype, natural human leukocyte interferon developed by **AIM ImmunoTech** (formerly Hemispherx Biopharma). It was primarily investigated for the treatment of mild to moderate **allergic asthma**. Unlike recombinant interferons, which consist of a single protein subtype, interferon alfa-n3 is purified from human leukocytes and contains a natural mixture of at least 14 different interferon alpha subtypes. The drug is administered via a low-dose oral (oromucosal) route, a platform referred to as **Alferon LDO** (Low Dose Oral). This method is designed to stimulate the mucosal immune system and induce a systemic shift from a Th2-biased allergic immune response toward a Th1-biased response, thereby reducing airway inflammation and hyperresponsiveness. A Phase 2 clinical trial for allergic asthma was initiated but subsequently withdrawn due to sponsor prioritization.
