Overview

Air + oxygen refers to the medical gas mixture used as the standard-of-care control arm in the Xe-SAH clinical trial (NCT04696523), sponsored by Turku University Hospital. In this Phase 2 study, patients with poor-grade aneurysmal subarachnoid hemorrhage (aSAH) receive mechanical ventilation with a mixture of 50% oxygen and 50% nitrogen (or air) for 24 hours. This control group serves as the comparator for the investigational use of inhaled xenon gas, which is being evaluated for its potential neuroprotective effects on white matter injury and long-term neurological outcomes. The mixture is administered to maintain normoxia and provide standard respiratory support during the acute phase following the hemorrhage.
