Overview

AKL1 is a botanical nutraceutical developed by AKL Technologies as an adjunctive therapy for obstructive airways diseases, including asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It is a patented oral formulation consisting of standardized extracts from *Picrorhiza kurroa* (containing the phytochemical apocynin), *Ginkgo biloba*, and *Zingiber officinale* (ginger). The formulation's active components, such as picroliv, androsin, and apocynin, are thought to exert anti-inflammatory effects by inhibiting the NF-κB activation pathway, reducing reactive oxygen and nitrogen species, and suppressing eosinophilic inflammation. While clinical trials like the TAKL study demonstrated good tolerability, they did not show statistically significant improvements in lung function as an add-on therapy.
