albendazole + azithromycin is a combination therapy consisting of the broad-spectrum anthelmintic albendazole and the macrolide antibiotic azithromycin. This combination is utilized in clinical research conducted by the University of California, San Francisco (UCSF), specifically in Phase 4 studies (such as NCT03527784) evaluating mass drug administration (MDA) strategies for soil-transmitted helminth (STH) infections. Albendazole exerts its effect by binding to the colchicine-sensitive site of the tubulin beta chain, inhibiting its polymerization into microtubules, which is essential for the parasite's structural integrity and glucose uptake. Azithromycin inhibits bacterial protein synthesis by binding to the 50S ribosomal subunit of the 70S ribosome. The combination is being studied for its impact on the gut microbiome and the efficacy of different diagnostic techniques, such as comparing rectal swabs to bulk stool samples, in pediatric populations.
