albendazole + secnidazole

Albendazole + secnidazole is a combination of two small-molecule antiparasitic and antimicrobial agents. Albendazole is a benzimidazole anthelmintic that inhibits microtubule polymerization by binding to β-tubulin in susceptible parasites, leading to impaired glucose uptake and depletion of energy stores, ultimately causing parasite death[6][8][10]. Secnidazole is a nitroimidazole antimicrobial that exerts its effect by reduction of its nitro group within anaerobic organisms, generating reactive intermediates that damage DNA and other critical biomolecules, resulting in cell death[4][9]. This combination has been used as an alternative therapy for refractory giardiasis (Giardia lamblia infection), particularly in pediatric patients who have failed conventional treatments. The regimen has demonstrated efficacy with good tolerability in small clinical series[2][5].
