Albinterferon alfa-2b + ribavirin is a combination therapy studied primarily for the treatment of chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection. Albinterferon alfa-2b (Albuferon) is a recombinant fusion protein of human albumin and interferon alfa-2b, designed to have a longer half-life than conventional interferon, allowing for less frequent dosing. Ribavirin is a synthetic guanosine analog with broad-spectrum antiviral activity, used as an adjunct to interferon-based therapies for HCV. The mechanism involves immune modulation and inhibition of viral replication: albinterferon stimulates immune response through interferon signaling pathways, while ribavirin acts by multiple mechanisms including inhibition of viral RNA synthesis. The combination was developed and clinically evaluated by Human Genome Sciences and Novartis for use as an alternative to standard pegylated interferon plus ribavirin regimens in chronic hepatitis C, aiming to improve efficacy and tolerability[5][6][7].
