Overview

Albumin (human) is a purified, sterile solution of human plasma protein, primarily composed of human serum albumin. It is used intravenously to restore and maintain circulating blood volume in conditions such as hypovolemia, hypoalbuminemia, burns, shock, acute liver failure, nephrosis, adult respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), cardiopulmonary bypass surgery priming fluid, hemolytic disease of the newborn (HDN), and ascites. The main mechanism involves increasing oncotic pressure in the blood vessels to draw fluid into the circulation from tissues. Beyond its role as a plasma expander and volume restorer due to its oncotic properties, albumin also binds and transports various endogenous and exogenous substances including hormones, fatty acids, bilirubin, drugs and electrolytes; it plays roles in modulating acid-base balance and maintaining vascular endothelial integrity[1][2][3][4][5][6].
