Albumin + sodium chloride is a combination volume replacement therapy consisting of human albumin (a colloid) and 0.9% sodium chloride (a crystalloid electrolyte solution). Developed and utilized by B. Braun Melsungen AG, this combination is primarily indicated for the treatment of hypovolemia and volume replacement, particularly in patients undergoing surgery or those with compromised renal function. Albumin works by increasing the plasma oncotic pressure, which draws interstitial fluid into the intravascular compartment, while the sodium chloride solution provides essential electrolytes and further expands the extracellular fluid volume. In clinical trial contexts, such as NCT00270751, this combination has been used as a standard-of-care comparator to evaluate the safety and efficacy of newer hydroxyethyl starch (HES) formulations in patients with renal impairment.
