A combination therapy consisting of 20% human serum albumin (HSA) and terlipressin, currently being investigated for the treatment of septic shock. Human serum albumin is a sterile, liquid formulation of albumin derived from human plasma that acts as a volume expander by increasing oncotic pressure, thereby drawing fluid into the intravascular space. Terlipressin is a synthetic vasopressin analogue and a prodrug that is converted to lysine-vasopressin; it acts primarily as a potent agonist at the vasopressin V1a receptor, inducing systemic vasoconstriction to improve mean arterial pressure. The combination aims to optimize microcirculatory recruitment and organ perfusion while reducing the need for high-dose catecholamines in patients with refractory septic shock.
