Albuterol + heliox is a combination therapy investigated for the treatment of status asthmaticus, particularly in pediatric populations. It consists of the short-acting beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist albuterol, which induces bronchodilation by increasing cyclic AMP levels in airway smooth muscle, delivered via a nebulizer powered by heliox (a medical gas mixture of helium and oxygen). Heliox is utilized for its physical properties; its lower density compared to atmospheric air reduces the Reynolds number of gas flow, promoting laminar flow and decreasing airway resistance. This facilitates more efficient delivery of aerosolized albuterol to the distal airways and reduces the patient's work of breathing. The Children's Hospital Medical Center, Cincinnati, conducted clinical research to determine if this combination could reduce hospital length of stay compared to standard oxygen-driven nebulization.
