Overview

Albuterol + ipratropium bromide is a combination inhalation therapy consisting of a short-acting beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist and a muscarinic antagonist. Albuterol works by stimulating beta-2 receptors in the lungs, leading to the relaxation of bronchial smooth muscle and rapid bronchodilation. Ipratropium bromide is an anticholinergic agent that blocks muscarinic acetylcholine receptors, particularly the M3 subtype, inhibiting vagally-mediated bronchoconstriction. This dual mechanism provides a synergistic effect, making it more effective than either agent alone for managing acute bronchospasm. In the context of the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia (CHOP) study, this combination was evaluated as a standard-of-care baseline therapy to determine if the addition of nebulized budesonide could further accelerate recovery in pediatric patients experiencing moderate to severe asthma flares.
