Overview

Albuterol + naloxone is a combination of two drugs, albuterol and naloxone, that may be used together in specific clinical scenarios involving respiratory distress and suspected opioid-induced bronchospasm. Albuterol is a short-acting beta-2 adrenergic receptor agonist (bronchodilator) primarily used to relieve bronchospasm in conditions such as asthma and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). It works by relaxing smooth muscle in the airways, leading to bronchodilation[2][6]. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist that rapidly reverses the effects of opioids, particularly respiratory depression caused by opioid overdose[1][8][10]. There is some evidence suggesting that naloxone may also help reduce acute opioid-induced bronchoconstriction when administered alone or in combination with bronchodilators like albuterol[5]. This combination does not have a unique brand name or widespread commercial formulation; its use together has been described mainly in emergency or prehospital settings for patients experiencing both opioid toxicity and bronchospasm.
