Alcohol + teduglutide refers to the pharmacological interaction or concomitant administration of ethanol and the recombinant peptide teduglutide. Teduglutide is a 33-amino acid analog of human glucagon-like peptide-2 (GLP-2), primarily indicated for the treatment of short bowel syndrome (SBS). As a GLP-2 receptor agonist, teduglutide promotes intestinal mucosal growth, increases villus height and crypt depth, and enhances intestinal blood flow, which collectively improve the absorptive capacity of the remaining small intestine. Alcohol (ethanol) is a central nervous system depressant that also acts as an intestinal irritant; its consumption can disrupt gut barrier integrity (leaky gut) and exacerbate dehydration and malabsorption, potentially counteracting the therapeutic benefits of teduglutide in SBS patients. While no fixed-dose combination product exists, the interaction is clinically significant in patient management. Furthermore, preclinical research has investigated the use of teduglutide to mitigate alcohol-induced intestinal permeability and associated systemic endotoxemia in the context of alcoholic liver disease.
