Alder + birch + hazel pollen extract is a combination of allergenic extracts used for allergen-specific immunotherapy (AIT) to treat tree pollen-induced allergic rhinitis and asthma. This therapy works by administering gradually increasing doses of the pollen extracts to the patient, which desensitizes their immune system to the specific allergens from alder, birch, and hazel trees. A three-year double-blind clinical study demonstrated that this combination extract was effective, reducing symptom scores to one-tenth of the initial level and increasing pollen tolerance by thirty-fold. The mechanism involves modulating the immune response from a Th2-driven allergic reaction towards a tolerant state, characterized by the induction of regulatory T cells (Tregs) and a shift in antibody production from IgE to blocking antibodies like IgG4.
