This combination therapy consists of aldesleukin and bevacizumab, evaluated specifically in clinical trials led by Dr. Jorge A. Garcia for the treatment of metastatic clear cell renal cell carcinoma (ccRCC). Aldesleukin is a recombinant human interleukin-2 (rIL-2) that functions as an immunotherapy by binding to the IL-2 receptor, thereby stimulating the proliferation and activation of cytotoxic T cells and natural killer (NK) cells to mount an anti-tumor response. Bevacizumab is a recombinant humanized monoclonal antibody that targets vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF), an important mediator of angiogenesis. By inhibiting VEGF, bevacizumab reduces tumor vascularization and may enhance the delivery or efficacy of immune-stimulating agents like aldesleukin. The combination aims to leverage the synergistic effects of immune activation and anti-angiogenesis in renal cell carcinoma, a disease known for its high vascularity and immunogenicity.
