Overview

This combination therapy involves the use of aldesleukin (recombinant interleukin-2) as an adjuvant to the Twinrix vaccine, which is a combined hepatitis A and hepatitis B vaccine. Developed for use in HIV-infected adults on stable antiretroviral therapy, the treatment aims to overcome the diminished immune response typically seen in this population when receiving standard vaccinations. Aldesleukin acts as a cytokine that targets the interleukin-2 receptor, stimulating T-cell proliferation and enhancing the antibody response to the viral antigens present in Twinrix. This specific application was evaluated in a Phase 3 clinical trial (NCT00451984) led by Aalborg University Hospital to address the clinical challenge of reduced vaccine efficacy in immunocompromised patients.
