Drug intelligence / Profile preview
Alfacalcidol + Calcium is a combination pharmaceutical product marketed by Onyx Pharmaceuticals. Alfacalcidol is a synthetic analog of vitamin D that acts as a prodrug, undergoing rapid conversion in the liver to calcitriol (1,25-dihydroxyvitamin D3), the active metabolite of vitamin D. It regulates calcium and phosphate metabolism by increasing intestinal absorption and renal reabsorption. Calcium is included as a mineral supplement to provide the necessary substrate for bone mineralization. This combination is primarily used for the management of conditions associated with vitamin D deficiency or impaired metabolism, such as osteoporosis, renal osteodystrophy, and hypocalcemia. It is particularly beneficial for patients with renal impairment, as alfacalcidol does not require renal hydroxylation for activation.
