alfentanil + dexmedetomidine

Alfentanil + dexmedetomidine is a combination of two intravenous sedative and analgesic agents used primarily in anesthesia and perioperative care. Alfentanil is a synthetic, short-acting opioid analgesic that acts as an agonist at the mu-type opioid receptor, providing potent analgesia and sedation. Dexmedetomidine is a highly selective alpha-2 adrenergic receptor agonist with sedative, anxiolytic, and mild analgesic properties; it produces sedation with minimal respiratory depression. When used together, these drugs have demonstrated synergistic effects for reducing emergence agitation (EA) after sevoflurane anesthesia in pediatric surgical patients. The combination reduces the incidence of postoperative nausea/vomiting, cough, laryngospasm, bronchospasm, and does not significantly increase bradycardia or respiratory depression compared to either drug alone[1][3][6]. This regimen is not marketed as a fixed-dose product but may be co-administered by clinicians for procedural or perioperative sedation.
