ALFQ (Army Liposome Formulation with QS-21) is a potent liposomal adjuvant system developed by the U.S. Military HIV Research Program (MHRP) at the Walter Reed Army Institute of Research (WRAIR). It is composed of synthetic monophosphoryl lipid A (3D-PHAD), cholesterol, phospholipids (DMPC and DMPG), and the saponin QS-21. ALFQ is designed to enhance both humoral and cellular immune responses to co-administered antigens. It has been evaluated in clinical trials for various infectious diseases, including HIV-1 and malaria, often in combination with protein subunit vaccines like A244d11gp120. The formulation is a more potent version of the earlier ALF (Army Liposome Formulation) and ALFA (ALF with Aluminum hydroxide) adjuvants.
