Alginate-capped selenium nanoparticles (Alg-Se-NCMs) are a nanocomposite formulation developed for antifungal and anticancer applications. The formulation involves selenium nanoparticles synthesized via chemical reduction (e.g., using ascorbic acid) and stabilized or capped with alginate, a polysaccharide extracted from bacteria such as *Azotobacter sp.* These nanoparticles exhibit hexagonal morphology and negative surface charges. In preclinical studies, Alg-Se-NCMs have demonstrated significant antifungal activity against pathogens like *Cryptococcus neoformans* and *Aspergillus niger*, as well as cytotoxic effects against HCT-116 colorectal cancer and HepG2 liver cancer cell lines. The alginate coating serves to improve the biocompatibility, stability, and delivery of the selenium payload.
