Overview

This drug is a combination therapy consisting of all-trans retinoic acid (ATRA) and idarubicin, primarily used in the treatment of acute promyelocytic leukemia (APL). All-trans retinoic acid is a derivative of vitamin A that induces differentiation and maturation of promyelocytes, leading to remission in APL. Idarubicin is an anthracycline antibiotic that intercalates DNA and inhibits topoisomerase II, resulting in cytotoxicity against rapidly dividing leukemic cells. The combination exploits the synergistic effects between differentiation induction by ATRA and cytotoxic action by idarubicin. This regimen has been widely studied as part of induction therapy for newly diagnosed APL patients, especially those with high-risk disease[2][4]. It may be referred to as the "AIDA" protocol.
