Overview
Allantoin is a naturally occurring diureide of glyoxylic acid, produced via the oxidation of uric acid. It is widely utilized in dermatology and wound care for its keratolytic, emollient, and skin-soothing properties. By softening keratin and increasing the water content of the extracellular matrix, allantoin promotes skin desquamation and stimulates epithelial cell regeneration. It is frequently formulated in topical shampoos, creams, and solutions, often in combination with agents like coal tar, clioquinol, or dexamethasone. Beyond topical use, it has been investigated in combination therapies (e.g., DAM solution) for systemic or internal applications such as the treatment of post-operative ileus.
