Overview

Allogeneic adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (ASCs) are a type of multipotent cell therapy being developed by the Instituto de Investigación Sanitaria de la Fundación Jiménez Díaz. These cells are harvested from the adipose tissue of healthy donors and are utilized for their potent immunomodulatory, anti-inflammatory, and regenerative properties. In the clinical setting, specifically within the CELOPHIN trial, they are administered via subconjunctival and topical conjunctival injection to treat severe ocular surface diseases characterized by progressive scarring. The primary indications include cicatricial conjunctivitis associated with Stevens-Johnson syndrome, Lyell syndrome (toxic epidermal necrolysis), and mucous membrane pemphigoid. The therapy aims to modulate the local immune response and inhibit the fibrotic processes that lead to vision-threatening conjunctival symblepharon and ocular surface failure.
