This investigational cell therapy involves the use of allogeneic adipose-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) for the treatment of acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS). Developed by Shaoxing Second Hospital, the therapy utilizes the innate immunomodulatory properties of MSCs to reduce lung injury and systemic inflammation. In a Phase I pilot study (NCT01902082), twelve adult patients with ARDS received a single intravenous dose of 1 × 10^6 cells/kg. The MSCs used in the study were sourced from ATCC (specifically PCS-500-011) and were derived from a 23-year-old female donor. The study aimed to evaluate the safety and feasibility of systemic administration, monitoring biomarkers such as IL-6, IL-8, and surfactant protein D (SP-D). While the infusion was found to be safe with no significant adverse events, clinical effects were noted to be weak at the tested dosage.
