Allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (BM-MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy being developed by the Fondation Ophtalmologique Adolphe de Rothschild for the treatment of severe ocular chemical burns. These cells are administered via subconjunctival injection to patients with stage VI burns (Dua classification) to prevent corneal perforation and promote healing. The therapeutic effect is primarily mediated through the paracrine release of anti-inflammatory, immunomodulatory, and trophic factors, which collectively reduce ocular surface inflammation, protect the limbal stem cell niche, and support the regeneration of the corneal epithelium. This approach aims to provide a tissue-protective environment in the acute phase of injury, potentially reducing the need for later high-risk surgical interventions like keratoprosthesis or limbal transplantation.
