Allogeneic bone marrow-derived mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are an investigational cell therapy developed by the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center for the treatment of anthracycline-associated cardiomyopathy. These multipotent stromal cells are sourced from healthy donor bone marrow and administered via intravenous infusion. The mechanism of action involves the cells homing to the site of cardiac injury, where they release paracrine factors that promote myocardial repair, reduce inflammation, and stimulate angiogenesis. This process aims to induce reverse remodeling of the heart, thereby improving cardiac function and preventing the progression of heart failure in cancer survivors who have suffered cardiotoxicity from chemotherapy.
